Wood
Each Machaon Wood Creation paddle is made of a single piece of Western Red Cedar, which combines light weight, high breaking strength and excellent rot resistance.
Our Western Red Cedar is hand selected, sourced from a local, family-run saw mill right here in the Comox Valley.
Western Red Cedar comes in a wide range of colours from very light red or yellowish brown to deep dark chocolaty brown. The later often shows random streaks of lighter colour. We pick the wood pieces for the mechanical properties required and let the paddle surprise us with its final colour and grain pattern.
Every Machaon Wood Creations Greenland Paddle is a unique natural product, we do not apply any stains to our paddles and let the wood show its own individual beauty.
Finish
Tung oil is hand-applied in 5 coats for water protection and to highlight the natural beauty of the wood.

Custom options
Western Red Cedar is a soft wood. This means that, as you use it, some dings and dents will add to the character of your paddle, telling of the adventures you’ve had together. These are marks of honour like the scratches on your boat.
If the kind of paddling you do gets those paddle tips in contact with rocks etc. on a regular basis you might want to consider one of our custom options for added durability:
-
Hand-laid fiberglass tips
We use 3 brilliant clear coats of marine-grade epoxy resin and the fiberglass is 6oz. for a balance of strength and beauty.
-
Hardwood and fiberglass tips
We have maple, cherry or walnut available for tips with higher impact resistance. You might consider this option for a powerplay paddle.
Machaon Wood Creations also has a limited supply of yew wood for the tips. Technically not a hard wood, its properties are comparable to the hardwoods mentioned above. Available while quantities last.
