It’s a small blade, compared to a Euro-blade…
The blades of a Greenland Paddle have a very similar surface area as a Euro-blade. The different shape demands an adjusted paddling style in order to submerge the blade fully and get the most power out of each stroke.
Greenland Paddles are often associated with a flat water touring, high cadence, low angle style but they have also proven themselves as effective high angle, rough water tools. There are many accomplished paddlers out there that do everything with a Greenland Paddle that others do with their Euro-blade, and you can too if you choose to do so.

What’s the difference between a shouldered and an unshouldered paddle?
The shoulder is the transition between the loom and the blade. An unshouldered blade has a slightly different shape since the blade starts right at the loom and flares all the way out to the tip. But the performance is the same and it boils down to personal preference.
Machaon Wood Creations Greenland Paddles’ default transition is soft shouldered since we find that a lot of newcomers to Greenland Paddles appreciate the distinct reference point for their hand position.
We’ll happily make you an unshouldered paddle if that’s what you are used to. Please let us know when you’re placing your order.

Do you make laminated paddles? Two-piece Greenland Paddles?
The short answer is no to both.
At this point we are concentrating on what we are good at – custom made to order one piece Greenland Paddles, with a variety of custom options.

There are no drip rings, and my sleeves are wet!
Sorry to say that’s part of the deal. It’s a water sport after all!
To use a Greenland Paddle to its full potential your hands need to be able to freely slide to any position on the blade, be that for a sliding stroke, an extended blade for a sweep stroke or a Standard Greenland Roll.
